IntroductionBalakrishnan Kirubasankar specializes in low-dimensional functional materials, electrocatalysis, and sustainable energy conversion and storage. His research focuses on the atomic-scale design and interface engineering of two-dimensional (2D) materials, transition-metal compounds, water-splitting electrocatalysts, and advanced electrochemical energy technologies.
He received his Ph.D. from Pondicherry University, India, where his research focused on nanostructured electrode materials and hybrid energy-storage systems. During his doctoral studies, he was awarded the National Fellowship by the Ministry of Education, Government of India, in recognition of his academic excellence and research potential. He also participated in several nationally funded research projects supported by the Department of Science and Technology (DST) Nano Mission and the University Grants Commission (UGC), India, contributing to the development of advanced nanomaterials and electrochemical energy-storage devices.
He subsequently joined Sungkyunkwan University (Republic of Korea) as a postdoctoral researcher, where he conducted research on high-performance electrocatalysts for green hydrogen production through alkaline water electrolysis (AWE) and anion exchange membrane water electrolysis (AEMWE). His work, supported by the National Research Foundation (NRF) of Korea, focused on catalyst design, interface engineering, operando electrochemical analysis, and scalable electrolyzer technologies for sustainable hydrogen production.
To date, Bala has published more than 30 SCI-indexed research papers in leading international journals, including ACS Nano, Advanced Functional Materials, Advanced Science, Nano Energy, Chemical Science, Small, Nanoscale, and Chemical Engineering Journal. His publications have received more than 2,500 citations, with an h-index of 24 (Google Scholar). He has also contributed to several invited review articles and interdisciplinary research collaborations in advanced energy materials and electrochemical technologies.
His current research interests include 2D materials engineering, electrocatalysis, photoelectrochemical systems, artificial leaf technologies, green hydrogen production, and advanced electrochemical energy-conversion systems.
